Lesson 01: Skimming and Scanning Mastery

What is Skimming?

Skimming is reading a text rapidly to get a general overview of the content. You are looking for the "gist" or the main idea.

How to Skim Effectively:

  • Read the Title and Subheadings: They tell you exactly what the text is about.
  • Read the first paragraph (Introduction): It introduces the main theme.
  • Read the first sentence of every paragraph: This usually summarizes the paragraph's purpose.
  • Ignore details: Don't stop for dates, numbers, or difficult vocabulary.
  • Read the last paragraph (Conclusion): It summarizes the findings or final thoughts.

What is Scanning?

Scanning is reading a text rapidly to find specific information. You are looking for a particular "needle in the haystack."

How to Scan Effectively:

  • Identify Keywords: Look at the question and underline the most unique words.
  • Move your eyes rapidly: Don't "read" the sentences. Move your eyes in a "Z" or "S" shape.
  • Use a pointer: Use your finger or a pen to guide your eyes.
  • Stop when you find the keyword: Read the surrounding sentences carefully.
"Read the title, skim for 2 minutes, then go straight to the questions. Let the questions guide your reading."
